Games Workshop Announces ‘Warhammer 40’ 10th Edition

It had been rumored for some time now but, at Adepticon, Games Workshop made the whispers reality - Warhammer 40,000 is moving on to its 10th Edition later this year.

The new edition of Warhammer 40K will launch later this year, most likely mid-to-late summer, brings with it some massive changes:

  • Streamlined rules - The game has been completely revised to make the game quicker and less complex for new players.

  • Free Core Rules and Army Sheets Day 1 - For the first time in Games Workshop history, all of the rules and army sheets needed to play your favorite army will be free from Day 1 at launch. Armies have been designed to have all the rules needed to play on one page, while individual model rules will be located on data sheets (stat cards).

  • Codexes are no longer needed - Codex books, one of the biggest barrier of entries for players, will no longer be necessary due to the free rules. The books will mostly be focused on the story of the lore and faction specific rules. Due to the new format of rules, the 9th Edition books will be retired at launch. Ark of Omens, Boarding Patrol and Crusade will still function as normal.

  • An App…that works?! - They were the ones to specifically say it actually works, so we aren’t mocking anyone here. The new edition will have an app that will contain all the rules, army sheets, and data cards for players that want a smaller footprint at their table during the game.

Along with the announcement of 10th Edition, Games Workshop announced a slight revision of the Warhammer 40K: Combat Patrol boxes. Instead of simply being a means of collecting and expanding a player’s army, each Combat Patrol box will act as a simplified version of Warhammer 40K proper. Each of the boxes will be balanced against each other box in a way that allows a player to build the army from it as is and get it to the tabletop without having to invest all the time and money into a proper 2,000 point army. The rules will be similar to the main game and the models, of course, can be added to a larger force within the main game. This sounds a lot like what players were expecting Kill Team to originally be - a gateway experience into Warhammer 40K.

As far as what to expect model wise, we know the launch box is being said to be one of their biggest boxes yet and will feature Space Marines versus the Tyranid. The Terminators are getting rescaled to be larger than a Primaris Space Marine, but it is just a size modification and not an upgrade to a Primaris Terminator. Being the “bad guys” of the launch set, the Tyranid are getting a line refresh similar to what happened with the Necrons got in 9th Edition. While technically announced as a release for the next Arc of Omens’ chapter, they did announced a brand new model for Lion El’Jonson, Primarch of the Dark Angels. And, honestly, it has us rethinking our faction choices.

Honestly a major announcement that was one heck of a way to kick off Adepticon 2023. They said to keep an eye out on the Warhammer Community website throughout the week for more information on the game’s latest edition. If there is anything massive to announce, rest assured we’ll be here to talk about it.
