‘Magic The Gathering: Commander Masters’

Wizards of the Coast dropped a massive bombshell this week with the announcement that this year’s Masters set (a premium reprint set with a mix of new cards) would be Commander Masters.

Launching August 4, 2023, Commander Masters will be the first Masters set to be tied directly to the Commander format. There is a running joke within the Magic the Gathering community that every set is just another set made for Commander players. This is the third set (after Commander Legends and Commander Legends II: Battle for Baldur’s Gate) that proves that joke true. Not that we are complaing, as Commander is the primary format enjoyed around the Late Night Players’ studio.

The set, like Masters sets before it, will feature a host of reprints as well as brand new cards. Unlike previous sets, however, this Masters release will feature the traditional Draft Boosters, as well as Set Boosters; Collector Boosters; and four Commander decks. The Commander decks are of particular interest as they not only feature the format’s first colorless precon, but bring Eldrazi and Slithers back in a big way. Each of the preconstructed decks will include 10 all-new cards, with all-new Commanders at the helm.

Not much else is known about the set beyond a few reprints they showed off (like Jeweled Lotus). With MSRP being a thing of the distant past, the only prices we have are off of the official Amazon store front for Wizards of the Coast. You can google that if you want, as we prefer not to link to Amazon, but suffice to say this set carries a premium price. That isn’t something we should be shocked by at this point, but it still feels sad that there are going to be some amazing reprints in this set (we hope) and there will be an artificial barrier of entry from the get-go into what is supposed to be Magic the Gathering’s most friendly and casual format.

That is a conversation for another day, however. For now, check out the cards teased so far along with the box art for the product line.
