‘Warhammer 40K’ Announces ‘Leviathan’

At Warhammer Fest 2023, Games Workshop unveiled Leviathan, the launch box for the upcoming 10th Edition of Warhammer 40,000.

To call the Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan launch box massive would be a gross understatement. Reminiscent of the Warhammer 40,000: Indomitus box that launched 9th Edition back in 2020, Leviathan features two complete armies ready to get new players sucked into the grimdark future or add to existing players’ forces alongside the brand-new rules.

The box includes:

  • 25 Space Marine miniatures

  • 47 Tyranid miniatures

  • Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan exclusive rulebook

  • Chapter Approved Leviathan mission deck

  • Space Maines transfer sheet

  • Assembly guide

The only thing that is missing, it feels like, is some of the classic plastic terrain kits that are iconic in the world of Warhammer 40,000. It was one of the only issues we had with the Indomitus box as it is what pushes this towards being more for existing players than trying to get new players into the game. Terrain plays a very important role in these games so why not spotlight it in the flagship launch box? Granted that that is a small, small gripe in an otherwise amazing looking package.

For the Space Marines side of the box, players will find an assortment of miniatures that include the newly sized Terminator models. Both the Captain and Librarian in Terminator Armour look particularly dynamic, especially the Captain standing atop the corpse of a fallen enemy. The new Terminators are quite imposing in their upgraded scale. We are excited to see the inclusion of the Ballistus Dreadnought because Warhammer 40,000 has an impressive array of massive figures and getting these into the hands of new players early is great.

The Tyranids feature a refreshed line of models, similar to what the Necrons received in 9th Edition. Leviathan includes 47 of these monstrous miniatures. Though, calling them all miniatures would probably be misleading as the Screamer-Killer and Psychophage models are huge. The incredible amount of Termagants and Neurogaunts included in the box would be prime candidates for using the Citadel Contrast paints. From a lore perspective, the Tyranids have always been interesting to us but the model line wasn’t that enticing. So far this line refresh seems to be fixing that.

The Warhammer 40,000: Leviathan exclusive rulebook includes all the usual lore, fluff, and artwork we’ve come to expect from a battle book of any type from Games Workshop. It also includes all the core rules for 10th Edition, as well as the new Combat Patrol rules. For the players that enjoy the narrative play provided in Crusade, the book includes a full expansion that goes through the story of the Fourth Tyrannic War.

Finally, the 66-card Chapter Approved deck features a mix of flexible missions to aide casual and competitive players alike. The cards pull from the different Matched Play options found in older editions of Warhammer 40,000.

The only thing that hasn’t been announced for the box yet is the price. The Q&A held after the reveal stream stated that it would be “priced higher than the Indomitus box, but less than the Horus Heresy box.” That gives them a lot of wiggle room. On the official Warhammer Community page announcement, they are giving away 10 of these boxes and the fine print says the total retail value is $2,500 (USD). That would make the individual boxes $250 (USD) each. At that price, it should be ok. Anything higher than that and it would be question in our opinion.

Obviously once we have more concrete details, especially concerning release date, we’ll be sure to let everyone know. For now, all we can do is wait and decide on paint schemes. Are the Space Marines in Leviathan being added to an existing chapter or is it time to build a new army? Will you go crazy with the Tyranids or try something more traditional? Reach out and let us know!
