Frank Frazetta, Transformers ‘Secret Lairs’

Wizards of the Coast have shown off the cards for their new Secret Lair supergroup next month.

On their official Twitter page, they have announced a line of reprints featuring the art of famed artist Frank Frazetta:

He’s in the Hall of Fame for The Society of Illustrators, Science Fiction, and Album Covers, and we’re proud to see his iconic pieces in the Magic universe. Preorder The Art of Frank Frazetta on December 5th.

The reprints are for Midnight Reaper, Dark Ritual, Field Marshal, Seize the Day, and Temporal Manipulation. The most valuable reprint in the selection is Temporal Manipulation, but the key selling point of this set is on the art and not the actual cards.

Meanwhile, via an article on Polygon, WotC has detailed three Secret Lairs focusing on the war between the Transformers’ Autobots and Decipticons. Two of the three feature reskinned cards, similar to the previous Fortnite Secret Lair bundle, with the third being a Transformers themed Basic Land set.

The first of the Secret Lair sets is called Transformers: Optimus Prime vs. Megatron. The set features double-sided reprints of Darksteel Colossus (Optimus Prime), Blightsteel Colossus (Megatron), and Doubling Cube (The AllSpark). Of the three reprints, Blightsteel Colossus is the obvious money card, though the other two are valuable reprints.

Visually, the cards are nice as they connect to depict the two fighting over the AllSpark in both bot and vehicle form.

The second set is Transformers: Roll Out or Rise Up. These reprints are for various non-creature spells, each featuring Transformers art. The reprints are Greater Good, True Conviction, Dramatic Reversal, Fabricate, Collective Brutality, and By Force. Value wise, there isn’t much here. Some of these are fantastic staples in some Commander decks, but nothing that can’t be found for cheaper. That being said, this is all about the art once more (like the Frank Frazetta drop) so let the theme guide you as to rather or not you want them.

The final set is Transformers: One Shall Stand, One Shall Fall. Simply put it is a set of set of five basic lands, one for each of the mono-colors. The art depicts various locations around Cyberton.

All of these Secret Lair sets will be a part of the December super drop coming on Monday, December 5, 2022.
