GenCon 2023: Atomic Mass Games Announces New ‘Marvel Crisis Protocol’ Core Set And Characters

Ahead of this week’s GenCon celebrations, Atomic Mass Games announced several new products for the remainder of the year during a Marvel Crisis Protocol specific stream.

After a short presentation of painted versions of the new Black Panther and X-Men figures originally announced at Adepticon earlier this year (and teasing the possibility of Nimrod joining its Sentinel siblings), they showed off brand-new Webwarrior and Spider Foes. The Web Warriors will be receiving Gwenom (an alternate version of Spider-Gwen with the Venom symbiote) and the Scarlet Spider (Parker’s clone, Ben Reilly). Meanwhile, Spider Foes receive the remainder of the original Sinister Six - Electro, Shocker, Vulture, and the Sandman. Of all of these new sculpts, we are blown away by the Sandman model(s). They mentioned that the constructs were “grunts”, so we awesome they won’t work like Magneto’s constructs.

The big announcement that they save for the very end was the reveal of an updated 2-player core set for the game’s fourth year. The set is called Marvel Crisis Protocol: Earth’s Mightiest Core Set. It will include 11 models that are updated versions of models that originally appeared in the first core set, and the addition of the Winter Soldier, but with all new cards. The set is aimed at offering experienced players new options while simultaneously teaching new players about some of the new mechanics, like grunts (Ultron Drones) and transforming (Captain Marvel to Binary).

Along with the miniatures, the set includes a wide selection of terrain that offers a variety of mixes from previous terrain packs. The core set will feature update Crisis and Tactic Cards, with the Crisis Cards becoming tarot-sized to fit the corresponding map details. They have said that, while minor, the movement tools have received a slight upgrade.

Interestingly, this set offers five affiliations versus the originals two. Captain America leads the Avengers and the Red Skull helms the Cabal, just as with the original. For list diversity, especially for new players, the three new affiliations in the box are S.H.I.E.L.D. (Iron Man), Hydra (Baron Zemo), and the Sinister Six (Doctor Octopus, finally!).

The new core set is currently available for preorder on the Asmodee webstore for $149.99.
